In Serbia, there were 108,316 companies operating in 2022, of which 105,947, or 97.8%, were privately owned, according to the Republic Statistical Office. Among privately-owned enterprises, 2,914 companies had 50% or more foreign capital.
When categorized by industries, the highest number of companies were engaged in wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles, accounting for 29%, followed by the manufacturing industry at 14.8%, professional, scientific, innovative, and technical activities at 13.7%, construction at 9.3%, and transportation and storage at 6.8%.
These companies employed 1.288 million workers, with 1,099 workers employed in privately-owned enterprises. In terms of percentages, the highest employment was in the manufacturing industry, with 32%, followed by wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles with 19%, and transportation and storage with 7.9%.
