Serbia to invest €90 million in new locomotives and modernization of rail fleet

The Serbian government will acquire six new locomotives and modernize older ones through a €90 million loan, as reported by the “Nova” newspaper. According to the contract signed on January 28th by the Ministry of Finance with the European Company for Railway Rolling Stock Financing (Eurofima), €40 million will be allocated for the purchase of the six new locomotives.

An additional €25 million will be used for the modernization of diesel locomotives from series 711, and the same amount, €25 million, will go towards the modernization of passenger carriages for international traffic, type Z1.

Not long ago, in 2014, Serbia purchased 21 trains from the Swiss company “Stadler” for €99 million, meaning each one cost just €4.7 million.
