Serbia is in the process of negotiating a new long-term natural gas supply agreement with Russia, aiming for a contract that will last at least three decades. Discussions between delegations from both countries have so far outlined an annual delivery of 2.5 billion cubic meters of gas to Serbia via the “Balkan Stream” pipeline, with provisions for additional flexible quantities. The formula for determining the price of gas is still under negotiation.
The existing three-year gas supply contract between Serbia and Russia, signed in 2022, is set to expire at the end of May 2025. In preparation, Serbia has been working to diversify its energy sources. In addition to discussions with Russia, Serbia has secured agreements to import natural gas from Azerbaijan, with deliveries starting in 2024.
Serbia has also been strengthening its ties with Russia regarding energy cooperation. Government officials have expressed confidence that the country will have sufficient natural gas supplies for the winter season.
These negotiations and agreements reflect Serbia’s efforts to ensure a stable and diversified energy supply while balancing its geopolitical and economic interests.
