Serbia is focusing on branding its rural tourism as a growing trend globally, with plans to showcase its nature and authentic local products. The Ministry of Tourism and Youth has allocated 150 million dinars (around 1.3 million euros) in incentives for rural tourism projects, with applications open until March 30. Minister Husein Memić highlighted the success of this initiative, noting that the number of registered rural households offering tourism services has doubled, reaching 1,350 from 700 last year.
Rural tourism in Serbia is expanding, with a focus on eco-tourism and connecting local small businesses with tourists. An upcoming application will allow tourists to find and order local products after visiting rural households. Popular projects include adding new amenities, improving access roads, and creating wellness facilities.
Memić emphasized that rural tourism presents a significant opportunity for young entrepreneurs, with potential state funding of up to 150,000 euros per year for those with strong ideas. Examples of successful rural tourism projects include the “Fairy Tale Village” in Rudno, on the Golija mountain, which attracts significant attention on social media and has drawn tourists from Serbia and abroad.
A key requirement for this year’s funding is a social media presence, which helps hosts connect with guests and promote their offerings. Many rural tourism accommodations are listed on platforms like Booking.com, but direct communication and product ordering are seen as the future of the sector.
