Goran Vesić, the Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, announced that the tender for the design of the third line of Belgrade’s metro system, which will link Bežanija and Banjica, is now open. This move aims to advance the metro project and invites both local and international firms to participate.
Vesić reminded that the first two lines of the metro are already under construction: Line 1, which connects Makiš to Mirijevo, and Line 2, running from Mirijevo to Zemun and Bežanija. He emphasized that initiating the tender for the third line reflects a long-term vision for the city’s transit infrastructure.
“I expect many companies, including domestic ones, to respond to this public call. The first two lines were designed based on a 2012 intergovernmental agreement with the French company Egis, which we respected. The previous administration did not commit to the third line, so we have initiated a tender for its design,” Vesić said.
The development of the Belgrade metro is managed and financed by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, with Vice Prime Minister and Finance Minister Siniša Mali and Minister Vesić overseeing the project.
“Now is the right time to design Line 3, as the completion of the first two lines will set the stage for the construction of the third, ensuring a fully functional metro system for Belgrade,” Vesić added.
He addressed criticisms regarding the routes of the first two lines, asserting that the planning of the third line confirms the validity of the project. “Critics who argued that the first line alone should connect the entire city were mistaken. The full metro system, including the third line, will provide comprehensive connectivity across the city. The notion that a single line could cover all needs was unrealistic and politically motivated,” he noted.
The tender for the project design of the third metro line, which is planned to span about 24 kilometers, was announced on August 10, with an estimated value of approximately 25 million euros.
