Novi Sad
The city belongs to the group of the largest economic and cultural centres in FRY. This is the city with the developed industry of cables, steel ropes and steel ware, electro-technical machines and appliances, electric-porcelain, industrial tools, bolts, automobile and tractors spare parts, fertilisers, chemical and food products, tin plate wrapping material, textile, ready-made clothes, leather haberdashery, furniture, construction material, dental equipment and instruments and sanitation material and oil refinery. Trade and handicraft are also developed.
Novi Sad is the centre of the most fertile agriculture region in FRY. It is the seat of the wheat exchange. During the year 2001 the 68th international Fair of Agriculture was held in it and every year the city hosts more than 20 fair manifestations.
The vicinity of Fruska Gora, iodine spa, sandy beaches along the Danube and Petrovaradin Fortress have had a favourable impact on development of tourism. Novi Sad is an important transportation knot of a significant goods and passengers’ transport. The railway line connecting Belgrade with Budapest runs through the city and it is also the crossroads of 6 railway and 9 highway lines. The traffic across the Danube before the war in 1999 was carried out across three bridges. Novi Sad is connected with the Danube-Tisa-Danube canal by means of a small navigable canal. It is an important port on the Danube. Its winter shade can accept 130 vessels, while the right side of the shade is used as the shipyard.
