Minister of Agriculture, Trade, Forestry and Water Management Dusan Petrovic said yesterday that competition is crucial for a regulated economy, where citizens will have the greatest benefit as it will provide them with better and cheaper goods.
Petrovic told a conference, organised by the Competitiveness Commission on the occasion on Competitiveness Day, that it is important not to allow any form of closure of the market, its limitation, distortion and any other abuse of dominant position.
The government will not allow the market to collapse, the Minister said, recalling that the government recently passed a measure to determine the maximum price of Sava bread.
We carefully considered the decision and looked at all the costs that producers have, he said noting that this measure will probably stay in foce until the new harvest.
The government has thus shown that it is able to protect the market with the competencies it has at disposal.
We are considering the best way how to spend money from the agricultural budget, in order to increase overall agricultural production, he said.
Petrovic said that he will support subsidising interest on loans, primarily for livestock, meat and milk production as well as for fattening cattle.
He also expressed confidence that the Competiveness Commission will establish a strong institutional mechanism to provide the citizens of Serbia to have good quality goods and services.
