Dušan Živković, General Director of Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS), provided an update on the major overhaul of the B1 unit at the Kostolac B thermal power plant, stating that the project is proceeding as planned and is set to be completed before the start of the heating season.
The first major overhaul of the B1 unit, which began in May and follows the unit’s revitalization in 2014, is one of the most crucial undertakings to ensure the plant’s reliable operation in the coming years. The work, involving a range of extensive upgrades, is on schedule and expected to be finished before the heating season commences, Živković confirmed.
Significant improvements are being made to the boiler plant, including enhancements to operational parameters, replacement of components in the piping system, and a major overhaul of the turbogenerator. Additionally, the water supply system for the preparation and transport of ash and slag is being reconstructed. A secondary system for reducing nitrogen oxides is also being installed.
Živković emphasized that these capital repairs are designed to enhance the energy efficiency and environmental performance of the plant. He expects the highest quality of work from all involved and adherence to the project deadlines.
He also noted that both domestic firms and contractors are handling the overhaul, with work continuing uninterrupted even during extreme heat, thanks to effective project management. Alongside the B1 unit, the oldest and smallest A1 unit, with a capacity of 100 megawatts, is undergoing maintenance and is anticipated to return to the power grid by early August.
