New Šabac–Loznica fast road to boost connectivity and economic growth

The Ruma–Šabac Highway, which opened in October of last year, is now a key part of the shortest and fastest route connecting the capital city to Srem, Mačva, as well as western Serbia and Vojvodina to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Soon, this connection will be extended with the opening of the 54-kilometer fast road from Šabac to Loznica.

The 54.5 kilometers of fast road from Šabac to Loznica is set to be open to traffic by the end of the year, a full 15 months ahead of the contracted deadline. “I think this is a great success, a fantastic construction achievement, and we should thank the company ‘Azvirt,’ which carried out the work with exceptional intensity and top-notch quality,” said Aleksandar Antić, acting director of “Corridors of Serbia.”

Aleksandar Dašić, project manager at “Azvirt Beograd Branch,” emphasized that the company ensures all its projects are executed according to the highest standards, and this project was no exception.

A total of two million cubic meters of material were used for embankments, about one million cubic meters of stone for the upper layers, and around 500,000 tons of asphalt. The work involved up to 400 machines and a daily workforce of up to 700 workers.

“Regarding the engineering challenges, the amount of material that had to be incorporated, both in embankments and with stone aggregates, combined with the need to inspect 46 structures to ensure their suitability, was a significant task. At the same time, we ensured that local traffic was never interrupted on either side,” said Nikola Karadžić, an engineer from “Corridors of Serbia.”

The new first-class state road will have two lanes in each direction. A total of 46 structures have been built, including 16 overpasses and 13 bridges.

“All the essential work has been completed. Currently, we are working on final activities, such as installing elastic guardrails, wire fencing, and noise barrier walls,” said Antić.

According to announcements, the remaining access roads and local routes that will connect the residents of Srem and Mačva to the new road are expected to be finished soon.

Experts agree that the opening of this road will significantly improve mobility, attract more investments, and foster the development of local businesses and tourism.

Once open, it is estimated that the travel time from Belgrade to Loznica will be reduced to one hour and ten minutes. The route will feature a speed limit of 100 kilometers per hour, five roundabouts, and four grade-separated intersections between Šabac and Loznica.
