The German government is financing a pilot project for green hydrogen production in Serbia, as announced by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Measures. The initiative, known as the HyDSerbia project, will be implemented by Leipziger Energiegesellschaft, a company based in Leipzig that specializes in designing and implementing photovoltaic systems.
The facility will feature a photovoltaic generator alongside an electrolysis component for hydrogen production. Initially, the hydrogen generated will be used for small-scale industrial production and practical commercial applications at an unspecified location in Serbia.
This project aims to establish a technical, regulatory, and commercial foundation for scaling up green hydrogen production across the region. By developing reliable and sustainable supply chains for this climate-neutral energy source, the project seeks to meet part of the future demand in Germany.
The German ministry has allocated €3.5 million for the HyDSerbia project, which will run from 2022 to 2026. A feasibility study conducted by the German Fraunhofer Institute supports the project, highlighting the strategic importance of developing the Serbian hydrogen market for Germany’s green hydrogen import strategy.
Additionally, the German development bank KfW is exploring potential involvement in Serbia’s green hydrogen sector. KfW aims to stimulate local investment and support Serbia’s decarbonization efforts, having expressed interest in innovative renewable energy projects, including green hydrogen, during discussions with Serbian Minister of Energy Dubravka Đedović Handanović.
