Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Bozidar Djelic said that Greece will certainly support Serbia in its efforts to become a candidate for accession to the EU as well as for setting the date for the start of negotiations.
Djelic said after talks with Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas in Athens that Droutsas confirmed Greece’s full support to Serbia on its European path.
When Serbian fulfils the action plan and establishes full cooperation with the Hague tribunal, we are confident that we will have the voice of Greece for candidate status, but also for the starting date of negotiations for EU accession, stressed Djelic.
The Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration handed over to Droutsas a document that Western Balkan countries drafted regarding the future EU financial support for our region.
The document could be an integral part of Agenda 2014, which was initiated by Greece, to contribute to faster integration of the Western Balkans into the EU, he said.
Greece is among the three largest investors in Serbia, with more than 250 Greek companies present in our country and more than €2 billion of investments. Trade exchange between the two countries annually stands at around €400 million and is more or less balanced, Djelic said, adding that cooperation between the two countries can be much better.
Djelic, who is heading a delegation with 15 Serbian companies, said that Greece is coming out of economic crisis and that the next year should be a year of development.
The Serbian delegation will in the next two days discuss with Greek colleagues the possibilities for the development of financial and trade ties, said Djelic.
The Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration will meet with Deputy Prime Minister of Greece Theodore Pangalos, and attend a plenary session of the Greek-Serbian Business Council.
On 4 May, Djelic will open a Business Summit organised by the Chamber of Commerce of Athens.
