Nestlé’s new plant-based food production facility signals sustainable growth in Serbia

Nestlé has inaugurated a plant-based food production facility, marking a significant milestone in its 18-year presence in Serbia. The Surcin-based factory represents an investment of 80 million Swiss francs and has generated 220 new jobs. Nestlé’s commitment to the development of the domestic food industry and the local community is evident, aligning with its promise to continuously support Serbia’s progress.

Spanning 18,440 square meters, the plant produces meals from the GARDEN GOURMET brand, offering nutritionally rich and delicious plant-based options that have witnessed growing demand across Europe. This venture reflects Nestlé’s dedication to Serbia and aligns with its future plans to expand local manufacturing operations, showcasing confidence in Serbia’s potential as a hub for innovation and sustainability in the food industry.

Nestlé’s vision prioritizes sustainable food production and innovative solutions to meet modern consumer needs while minimizing environmental impact. The company advocates for regenerative agricultural practices, supporting local producers in Serbia as part of its global program. The country is the first in the region to be included in Nestlé’s regenerative agriculture initiative, benefitting vegetable, sunflower, and soy producers.

By responsibly sourcing raw materials and implementing eco-friendly production processes, Nestlé aims to reduce its carbon footprint and preserve natural resources for future generations. Serbia’s new plant operates under the “Zero waste to landfill” strategy, similar to Nestlé’s existing facility in the country. Both factories avoid sending any waste to landfills, utilize renewable energy sources, and employ a modern water purification system for environmentally safe water release.

Marjana Davidović, Nestlé’s General Director for Serbia, Montenegro, and North Macedonia, emphasized that the new factory positions Serbia as a crucial center for plant-based food production, not only in Southeast Europe but across the entire continent. The initiative, beyond being a production facility, aims to empower individuals and communities through job creation, skills development, and partnerships with local suppliers and producers. Nestlé’s commitment to regenerative agriculture further reinforces its dedication to laying sustainable foundations for future generations.
