A major investment linked to the organization of EXPO 2027 is the construction of a branch of the city railway that will connect Nikola Tesla Airport to the upcoming National Stadium in Surčin.
This new dual-track railway, spanning 18 kilometers, will link the main railway line from Belgrade to Novi Sad with the airport and the stadium. Designed exclusively for passenger traffic, it will feature three stops and one station.
The route will diverge from the Belgrade-Novi Sad line near Zemun Polje station, where construction began this summer. Currently, work is underway on just one of the six planned structures along the route, with nearly five kilometers already laid out.
The first structure to receive a construction permit was a viaduct at Zemun Polje, which will connect the future railway with the station through separate structures for each direction. The connection utilizes the outer tracks at Zemun Polje, allowing trains from the airport to merge into track 1, while those heading to the airport will diverge from an existing protective track. The right track will cross over the main railway and Kurirska Street via a long viaduct, while the left track will navigate a separate elevated structure over Kurirska Street before descending to join track 1.
After the Zemun Polje viaduct, the railway will continue straight toward Dobanovci and the planned residential project named Singidunum, located adjacent to the highway bypass. The residential area is designed with low-density housing to ensure the project’s viability and will include a large “Park and Ride” facility, allowing travelers to leave their vehicles and take public transport into the city. The planned stop will feature two side platforms, each four meters wide, catering to both directions.
Following the Singidunum stop, the route will curve toward a grade-separated crossing with the highway to Šid. This intersection is planned as a bridge positioned between the airport interchange and the Dobanovci interchange, allowing the railway to cross over the highway and local roads before curving parallel to Aerodromski Road.
The new railway will approach the airport complex from the south, placing the station about 500 meters from the entrance to Terminal 1.
Beyond Nikola Tesla Airport, the line will continue to Surčin, descending into a cutting at the intersection with Vojvođanska Street. This street will be elevated over the railway, with a stop planned nearby for local residents. After this stop, the route will ascend onto a viaduct crossing the newly constructed Novi Beograd-Surčin highway. The railway will then enter another curve, redirecting toward the National Stadium, where the branch line will conclude. This section will rise on an embankment to reach the stadium, with crossings at local roads managed through underpasses. The “National Stadium” station will be the only full station on the line, featuring four tracks and serving as the project’s terminus. It will include two island platforms, each eight meters wide and 160 meters long, along with connecting underpasses and elevators for those with reduced mobility.
Future phases of the project may include extending the railway to Obrenovac and constructing a dedicated track for a future exhibition complex, which will take over the exhibition pavilions after EXPO 2027 concludes. For the BG train and the new line to the airport, modern city trains have been ordered from China, with delivery expected by the end of 2026.
