Revitalizing hydroelectric power in Serbia: The ‘Bajina Bašta’ project

The overhaul of the reversible hydroelectric power plant (RHE) “Bajina Bašta” began on April 1st, with work on the first unit scheduled for completion by year-end, while the second unit’s refurbishment is planned for 2025. The entire revitalization project, valued at approximately 35 million euros, is being undertaken by Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS), as announced on May 10th. Dušan Živković, Acting Director, emphasized the significance of this initiative during an inspection of the ongoing works.

Reversible hydroelectric plants are among the primary focuses for leveraging renewable energy sources, serving both for power generation and energy storage. “Bajina Bašta,” being the sole reversible hydroelectric facility within EPS’s portfolio, stands as a crucial backup during periods of heightened electricity demand or droughts. Over its 42-year operational span, RHE “Bajina Bašta” has proven its worth by contributing to a stable electricity supply, thanks to the stored energy reserve in the Zaovine reservoir, noted Živković.

Highlighting the strategic importance of the “Bistrica” reversible hydroelectric project, slated for construction, Živković underscored its role in accommodating the anticipated rise in variable renewable energy sources. Recognizing the advantages of reversible hydroelectricity, EPS views the “Bistrica” initiative favorably, given its advanced documentation stage and project characteristics. According to Živković, the “Bistrica” plant’s energy storage capacity is pivotal for system balancing, ensuring optimal electricity production when demand peaks.
