The Government of Serbia, on the proposal of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, has adopted the Waste Prevention Plan for the Republic of Serbia, one of the key strategic documents in this area. The plan aims to promote the development of green technologies, new industries, and job opportunities in the recycling sector, as well as in product repair and sustainable design.
Minister of Environmental Protection, Irena Vujović, emphasized that preventing waste generation significantly contributes to more efficient environmental protection and better living conditions for citizens.
“With the adoption of this planning document, we are establishing a comprehensive framework to monitor our country’s progress in achieving waste prevention goals, as well as contributing to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda. We have set objectives and priority areas for waste prevention, along with measures for implementation for the 2025-2030 period. By preventing waste generation, we encourage the sustainable use of resources, reduce the need for raw materials and energy, which will have a positive impact on the environment. Reducing the amount of waste generated leads to lower emissions of pollutants and more effective protection of land and water,” said Vujović.
Vujović also pointed out that effective waste prevention could complement and strengthen other planning documents related to waste management and the application of circular economy principles.
“Research and development in the field of cleaner products and technologies that generate less waste, more efficient resource use, and sustainable material management are crucial factors for the success of waste prevention strategies. These strategies need to be implemented at all levels—from local to national. What lies ahead is working to raise awareness among citizens, entrepreneurs, legal entities, and local governments on how to live sustainably, encouraging everyone to adopt eco-friendly behaviors for the benefit of the entire community,” Vujović added.
