Serbia`s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said yesterday that Sweden is the country with the largest number of asylum seekers from Serbia and expressed the hope that our country in cooperation with the European Commission will successfully solve the problem of false asylum seekers.
Dacic said after meeting with Swedish Minister for Migration and Asylum Policy Tobias Billstrom that it is Serbia’s obligation to prevent abuse of asylum, adding that visa liberalisation is Serbia’s most positive achievement in European integration.
He expressed gratitude for the Swedish support and donations to the Serbian police.
Billstrom called on Serbian citizens not to abuse the institution of asylum in his country, given that asylum is not there for economic reasons but for those who are truly at risk.
It is important that the Serbian citizens know that Sweden provides only accommodation, board and €2 per day which is not enough money for public transportation in Stockholm, he said.
Billstrom also recalled that the EU has recently adopted a directive introducing a ban on entering the Schengen zone for a period of five years to all persons who have abused the right to asylum.
