Serbia’s EPS takes over Kostolac block 3, marking a new era in energy production

The new Kostolac Block 3 has been in trial operation since the spring, and the Government of Serbia has officially approved Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) to take over the facility from the Chinese company CMEK (China Machinery and Engineering Corporation), as reported by Radio Television of Serbia (RTS).

The construction of Block 3, which cost over $600 million, represents EPS’ first new production unit in 35 years. The Government of Serbia appointed EPS to oversee the plant’s operation yesterday, according to the RTS website.

The new thermal power plant in Kostolac is expected to produce up to 2.5 terawatt-hours of electricity annually, accounting for approximately seven percent of EPS’ total electricity output. Additionally, the facility comes with a one-year warranty, ensuring the Chinese investor is responsible for addressing any malfunctions or operational disruptions.
