Serbia is stepping forward on environmental protection- new system for ash removal at TENT

Thermoelectrical power plant Nikola Tesla (TENT) in Obrenovac introduced on Wednesday a new system for collection, transport and removal of ash at the thermoelectrical power plant Nikola Tesla B in which the EU invested over €30 million and which will significantly reduce air and water pollution.

Minister of Energy and Mining Petar Skundric announced at a ceremony held for this occasion that €1.2 billion will be invested in environmental protection in the field of energy in next few years.

Around €3 billion will be invested in the revitalisation of existing energy capacities, and in the next five to six years another €5 billion will be used for construction of new production capacities, the Minister specified.

He noted that the policy of energy product prices is very important and that Serbia will not be able to make progress if it doesn’t harmonise its prices with those in the region.

Minister of Environment and Spatial Planning Oliver Dulic pointed out that the new system of ash purification in the TENT Block B will enable annual savings of almost 18 million tonnes of water.

By using the new system, approximately 25,000 tonnes of ash was used in cement production this year, said Dulic adding that the system’s trial operation was completed today.

Head of the EU Delegation in Serbia Vincent Degert said that the EU will grant €21 million to support the project of installation of electric filters in blocks A6, B1 and B2 of TENT.

The EU will allocate an additional €15 million to build a water purification station in Obrenovac, he stated.

Serbia is advancing in the EU accession process, which is seen in the energy sector, he noted, explaining that Serbia should determine the price of energy products to attract foreign investors, given that electricity prices must match the cost of its production, Degert said.
