Serbia initiates ARTIFACT project to boost flood resilience using AI technology

The Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia is launching the international project ARTIFACT (Artificial Intelligence for Flood Resilient Infrastructure).

“This project represents a significant advancement for our institute and Serbia. By collaborating with leading European institutions, we are unlocking new opportunities to apply artificial intelligence in tackling complex environmental and infrastructural challenges,” stated the acting director of the Institute, Prof. Dr. Dubravko Ćulibrk.

The initiative aims to develop advanced AI models for flood forecasting that will enhance prediction accuracy and responsiveness to extreme weather events. Milan Stojković, head of the “Green AI” research group, emphasized the importance of establishing the Institute as a regional leader in AI technologies for water engineering.

“The ARTIFACT project aims to strengthen the resilience of urban infrastructure to floods through the integration of artificial intelligence and nature-inspired technical solutions. A key challenge will be adapting these innovations to local climatic and infrastructural conditions in collaboration with the IT sector and the academic community,” Stojković noted.

The ARTIFACT project involves experts from Serbia, the Netherlands, and Germany, focusing on creating sustainable flood protection systems. Notable partners include Delft University of Technology, IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, and Hamburg University of Technology.
