This year, for the first time, Serbia has an organized performance and a national stand at the world’s largest gaming fair “Gamescom” in Cologne, which began on August 23th and ends today. More than 1,220 exhibitors from 63 countries presented their new products, while thousands of gamers waited patiently in lines to try out games that should hit the market in the coming months. Serbia performed with the idea of affirming domestic talents, games created in the country, as well as quality service that can be competitive on the global market.
Our gaming industry employs about 2,300 professionals and makes a profit of about 125 million euros per year, and more than half of all games are original intellectual property, according to the Video Game Industry Association of Serbia (SGA).
Organized by SGA and with the support of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, nine companies from our country presented their achievements in Cologne. Mihailo Vesović, Director of the Sector for Strategic Analysis, Services and Internationalization of PKS, emphasized on this occasion that what makes the gaming industry particularly important is the fact that many professions that are not directly associated with information technologies work within it, such as psychologists, screenwriters, music and visual artists. , designers and others. As he stated, video games produced in Serbia in 2022 were played by more than 100 million people around the world.
The global gaming industry has been expanding for the past few decades, and Serbia is not lagging behind in this trend. On the contrary, it is unique in that even 30 percent of women work in this industry, which positions us far above the global average.
“Gamescom” in Cologne last year had 265,000 visitors from 100 countries, 1,100 exhibitors from 53 countries and 230 million views of online content during the fair itself, according to the PKS announcement. Along with the GDC conferences in San Francisco and the Tokyo Game Show in Japan, this is one of the three key global events for the gaming industry.
