EMS orders Spatial Plan for Panonian Corridor power transmission project

Elektromreža Srbije (EMS) has commissioned the creation of a Spatial Plan for the Panonian Corridor project, which involves the construction of three double transmission lines stretching 150 kilometers from Belgrade to the Hungarian border. According to the project specifications, the development of the Spatial Plan for the special purpose area (PPPPN) will cover the following three new double transmission lines:

  • New 2×400 kV line from Subotica 3 Transformer Station (TS) to the Serbian-Hungarian border (Šandorfalva TS), 28 km long (including the reconstruction of the 400 kV switchyard at Subotica 3 TS, with the addition of five fields to the station);
  • New 2×400 kV line from Sombor 3 TS to Novi Sad 3 TS, 80 km long (including the expansion of 400 kV fields at Sombor 3 and Novi Sad 3 TS);
  • New 2×400 kV line from Sremska Mitrovica 2 TS to Belgrade 50 TS, 60 km long (including the expansion of 400 kV fields at Sremska Mitrovica 2 TS and equipping 400 kV fields at Belgrade 50 TS).

The total length of the Panonian Corridor will be around 150 kilometers, spanning from Zemun to Kanjiža and the Hungarian border, as reported by eKapija.

As announced by the Minister of Energy, Dubravka Žedović Handanović, the Panonian Corridor project will strengthen the capacity and connectivity between Serbia’s and Hungary’s power transmission systems.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated in October that the electricity transmission corridor with Hungary should be completed by the end of 2028.

However, this date applies only to the commissioning of the first, shortest section of the Panonian Corridor. According to EMS’s website, the corridor will be developed in four phases.

EMS explains that the first section of the project will involve the construction of a new 400 kV interconnection line between Serbia (Subotica 3 TS) and Hungary (Šandorfalva TS), with a line length of slightly less than 30 km on the Serbian side. This section is expected to be built and operational by 2028.

The second section will entail a full reconstruction of the Subotica 3 TS (400/110 kV), which is necessary due to both its role in the first section of the project and its age, ensuring reliable operation. The reconstruction is expected to be completed by 2030.

The third section will involve the construction of a 400 kV dual-system transmission line between Sombor 3 TS and Novi Sad 3 TS, enhancing the reliability of the network in the Bačka region. This section should be operational by 2030.

The final section will include the construction of a 400 kV dual-system line between Belgrade 50 TS (part of the Northern Corridor project) and Sremska Mitrovica 2 TS, further strengthening the transmission network in the region. This part of the project is also expected to be completed by 2030.

The total project value is estimated at approximately 108 million euros.
