Dr. Mihailo Jovanović, Director of the Office for IT and e-Government, participated as a keynote speaker at the panel discussion “Data Management in the Public Sector: Ensuring Transparency, Fairness, Accountability, and Citizen Data Protection” at the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence Summit. Director Jovanović emphasized that Serbia had a visionary approach when it adopted its Artificial Intelligence Development Strategy for the period 2020-2025 in 2019, laying solid foundations for building a digital economy and implementing AI across various sectors of society.
“The new government has shown exceptional commitment to digitalization and new technologies, particularly the development and application of artificial intelligence. Prime Minister Miloš Vučević formed the AI Council within the first 100 days of the government’s mandate, which includes distinguished experts from public administration, the private sector, and academia. The Council is already working on various tasks, mainly the application of AI in daily life, improving the work of public administration, public enterprises, and the economy,” said Director Jovanović, adding that the Council is also working on one of the most important strategic documents at the moment, the new Artificial Intelligence Development Strategy for 2025-2030, which will be adopted by the end of this year.
“In 2025, we will continue to invest in the further expansion and application of the supercomputer housed in the State Data Center in Kragujevac, as well as in developing appropriate software in various sectors of our society to improve public administration efficiency, healthcare diagnostics, and other fields. The Republic of Serbia has allocated a total of 55 million euros for this purpose. In the first part of next year, the first upgrade of the existing supercomputer will result in graphic processors that are seven times faster than the current system, with additional data storage space. A contract worth 5 million euros has already been signed for this phase. We are currently negotiating with the French Government for the second expansion and application of the supercomputer, which involves a loan worth 50 million euros,” said Jovanović, adding that further modernization and investment in state-of-the-art infrastructure are part of the “Leap into the Future – Serbia 2027” program, as stated in the press release.
Jovanović concluded by stating that by the end of 2025, Serbia plans to acquire and install the most powerful supercomputer in the broader region, with a continued focus on applying artificial intelligence to create better living conditions for all citizens.
