Serbia is preparing to launch a digital wallet service by the end of 2025, with an initial focus on driver’s licenses and health insurance cards, as announced by Mihailo Jovanović, Director of the Office for IT and e-Government. The digital wallet will allow citizens to store personal documents in electronic form.
The initiative is part of a broader EU project that aims to provide a secure, reliable, and private way of digital identification for European citizens. Digital wallets are expected to replace physical documents like student IDs, passports and credit cards, accessible both online and offline.
Jovanović emphasized that the goal is for citizens to fully transition to using mobile applications for administrative services. The EU digital identity wallet project officially began in May 2024, with plans to be available across all member states by the end of 2026. Serbian citizens will have the option to use this service voluntarily, with the added benefit of enhanced security.
Additionally, the EU will ensure that the use of the digital wallet remains free, offering the option of selective disclosure of personal information to reduce the risk of profiling. The full implementation of the service in Serbia will depend on the speed of the European Union’s adaptation of its systems.
