As Central and Eastern European countries feel the impact of Germany’s industrial slowdown, Serbia remains resilient with growing trade, albeit at single-digit rates. While Germany is still Serbia’s largest export partner, imports from China are rapidly increasing, now accounting for 13% of total imports. This shift highlights Serbia’s expanding trade relationships with countries like Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and those in Africa and Asia.
Exports to China have surged by 52%, significantly outpacing the 2.9% growth in exports to Germany. Serbia’s trade agreements, particularly with China and upcoming partnerships with countries like Egypt, are expected to further diversify its export markets. However, concerns remain regarding potential competition from Chinese goods and the implications of EU accession on these agreements.
Economists emphasize the importance of maintaining strong ties with European partners while navigating these new opportunities, noting that Serbia’s economic future will largely depend on the EU’s growth dynamics.
